Psalm 1: Bind My Wandering Heart to Thee

,

I could feel the RV shifting as the strong winds whipped around it. I look out the window on one side and see one of my empty Bonnie Plant cups rolling around in the garden. I look out the other side where my foldable rocking chair was knocked over to its side. Whatever didn’t have much weight or wasn’t in a secured spot, it was going to end up in a different place than where I left it. This has been a normal occurrence during our recent storms.

Psalm 1 describes the wicked as being like chaff that the wind drives away. Some might consider it freedom to go where the wind blows. I see it as being at the mercy of the wind that pushes around rather than carries. The kind that’s unpredictable and dangerous.

I’d rather be like a tree planted by streams of water (Psalm 1:3). Rooted and provided for by the Living Water.

Even then, how easy it is to feel like the wind is going to take me away. While I know the RV is a safe place and a refuge from the storm, it’s still unsettling to feel it shift around. Part of me wonders if stronger winds will come along and successfully whisk me off.

“Prone to wander, Lord I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love.”

The winds of this world can sometimes feel stronger than my stand for Christ, but they are certainly not stronger than His love for me. He’s got me.

“Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee.”

About Me

My name is Nikki. I’m a suburban transplant who now lives a quiet life where morning light spills over pastures and the scent of cow manure fills the air. Between taking care of the home, tending to animals, and nurturing my garden, I’m learning over and over again to lift my eyes up and let God’s grace take over.

Here, I write about the beauty and ache of the everyday moments and ordinary days, about faith that takes root, and about a Savior who meets us in both the noise and the stillness. My prayers is that each story or reflection will point to Jesus so that you, dear reader, will find Him in the middle of your own everyday and ordinary moments.
