In the parable of the tenants (Matthew 21:33–46), Jesus tells of workers who were entrusted with a vineyard. But when the owner sent his servants, and even his son, they refused to yield what wasn’t theirs.
It’s easy to read and feel distant from them… until we recognize how tightly we can cling.
Our plans.
Our roles.
Even the good things God has placed in our care.
We live like owners instead of stewards.
And still, Jesus says:
“The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.”
What we resist, God establishes.
Psalm 18 offers a different posture:
“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer…” (Psalm 18:2)
Where the tenants grasped for control, David rested in God.
Where they rejected the Son, David trusted the Rock.
Maybe today you feel the quiet fear of losing something you love.
But what if surrender isn’t loss—
it’s being held?
“He rescued me because He delighted in me.” (Psalm 18:19)
The cornerstone we’re tempted to resist
is the very One holding everything together.
So we loosen our grip.
Not because it’s easy—
but because He is faithful.
And in Him, we are not left empty-handed.
We are held.
