Raised beds and I are match made in heaven. I’ve been building them because I absolutely hate weeding. To go through the slow process of picking out weeds throughout the garden only for more to come through a couple of days is too frustrating for me to keep up with.
God cursed us with a ground that won’t cooperate, causing us to sweat and toil for our food, therefore this contempt of mine is biblical.
…cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth of you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till your return to the ground,… (Gen. 3:17-18)
So if you hate weeding like I do, your feelings are justified.
Weeds use up nutrients from the ground making it more difficult for the crops to grow. In the same way, the sin in our life will stunt our spiritual growth if we let it. The battle can overwhelm us to the point of giving up and letting sin take over our garden.
Thank God we don’t have to fight the battle alone. Jesus was sent to clear us of our sin so that we can live without being overtaken by evil. He is the tool that removes all the weeds when we repent. If that tool is being offered to you, don’t pass it up! You’ll be working harder to fight a losing battle when the battle is already won.
Raised beds may not eliminate all weeds for good, but it’s a tool I’m not going to reject.
